Statement of Purpose

Educating for Global Citizenship

The Alliance for International Education brings together all those who are committed to advancing international and intercultural understanding through education. It promotes collaborative ventures that enhance the learning of relevant concepts, skills and values.

We cordially invite you to the next AIE Conference on

Friday 24 – Sunday 26 October 2008 in Istanbul, Turkey
(we will be hosted by the Enka Schools)

The Conference theme is

“International education: a bridge to intercultural understanding”


Call for papers:


An abstract of the proposed presentation, not exceeding 300 words, together with the names and full contact addresses for the conference presenters, should be sent to ceic@bath.ac.uk to arrive no later than 31 March 2008. Submissions may be sent at any time. They will be subjected to peer review and successful applicants will be notified within four weeks of receipt of the submission.

In planning presentations those submitting should bear in mind that the total time available during the conference for each presentation will be a maximum of 20 minutes. The proposals may be based on evidence gained from research or other projects already completed, may present information about on-going programmes or may put forward ideas for innovative schemes or topics for future exploration, in the fields associated with the overall theme for the conference. In particular, submissions will be welcomed in the following areas, though alternative topics within the conference theme will also be considered.

Short papers for presentation in the conference strand programme (parallel sessions in cognate areas), relating to the conference theme, are invited in the following areas

  • Definitions, interpretations and issues in respect of intercultural awareness, intercultural understanding, intercultural education and their relationship to international education
  • Models of curriculum
  • Partnerships and programmes that make a difference in promoting intercultural education
  • Student learning in the classroom context (eg programmes, lessons, resources)
  • Intercultural understanding in non-formal educational settings (eg student exchanges, web exchange schemes, extra-curricular activities)
  • Training new teachers
  • The continuing professional development of teachers and administrators
  • Managing and governing institutions (eg recruitment of teachers, innovative administrative structures, admissions procedures)
  • Assessing and evaluating learning for intercultural understanding.
